Military and Aerospace Group has been awarded the contract
to supply the Automatic Test Systems for the Sting Ray Mod
1 Torpedo programme. This contract, awarded by BAE Underwater
Systems, Waterlooville, was won in the face of stiff competition.
Worth
over £7M this contract, for the supply of three Automatic
Test Systems, associated Reference Equipment and Spares,
represents a major award. Two of the Automatic Test Systems
are for testing the complete torpedoes and the third is
primarily for testing the torpedo sections.
All
items to be supplied under this contract will be produced
by Racal Instruments at their Ferndown Location in Dorset
UK and installed and commissioned at DM Gosport. The first
Automatic Test System is due delivery in May 2005.

The
Sting Ray Mod 1 lightweight anti-submarine torpedo, designed
by BAE, is designed to be launched from maritime patrol
aircraft, helicopters and surface ships. This 21st
Century weapon combines essential attributes of high speed
and manoeuvrability. Sting Ray Mod 1 is the Life Extension
programme for the very successful Sting Ray Mod 0 torpedo
which will extend the life of the torpedo to 2025.
